The origin. Made for the I'm Linux contest. I wanted

to stay away from live footage, or any usual representation. Instead I looked for a more abstract form, trying to touch symbols (they tend to be stronger). Everything is symbolic in this video and has a purpose, from the very beginning with the cell/egg form representing the beginning of life, the metamorphosis, multiplication, then fusion to build something better and stronger (only with collaboration you can go higher), etc.

Comments
Aldrenean : Thank you, for the voice it doesn't sound weird to me but maybe it's just a region or feeling thing.
c0534942 : I'm happy that you liked the voice, I will tell Sanya (my friend) that a lot of people enjoyed her voice :D I'm glad you understood what I wanted to do... or better say what I didn't wanted to do : always measuring up against Apple or Microsoft. I hope it will be picked too... ;-)
Shunnabunich : I agree with the "rise up", but I must admit that I finished this very very late in the night, and my mind wasn't all that clear at that moment. "Rise up" would have been better, maybe later on I will be allowed to change that little detail. I'm happy that you like it and what are you waiting for to get that PPC distro ??? :D
Peace everyone,
A.
This video (the version with the girl voice) was uploaded -after- the entry period.
Theguardian : more than one person uploaded corrected versions of their entries after the "entry period", because of this I asked FIRST the people who organize the contest if I was able to submit a corrected version with a new voice and they told me I could do it, I have the emails proving it, and it was them that relinked to the right video.
I really don't see what you are trying to prove or point...
But your attitude makes me quite sad.
A.
Raise with us?? Looks like Darth Vader lol
Laugh if you want, but I won't take to seriously the comments made by someone who became a member just 40 minutes ago with the only purpose of bashing things down.
Go somewhere else, we don't need people like you here,
A.
First, I must say: Wow. By far the best of the finalists. The production quality really makes this shine.
Second, I think the problem with "raise with us" is that raise is normally used as "raise [noun]", so you raise the roof, raise your voice, raise a question, etc. In this context "rise up with us" is the next closest thing to convey the revolutionary meaning you intend (you might rise up in protest of something). Another reason to avoid "raise" here is that it sounds exactly like "raze" which means to tear down (you might raze a building). This is fertile pun territory, but hard to navigate without sounding awkward (even for native speakers).
If you *really* want to use "raise with us" you have to build up to it. You would have to have several (probably 3 or 4) uses of phrases like: "raising the bar", "raising security", "raise the stakes", etc. Then you can probably use "raise with us" and people will get it.
Anyway, just my two cents. Great work.
Speed8ump : Thanks for the nice comments, and already people told about the raise with us, we will see how it turns ! And if it's selected if people prefer to keep it this way or to change it... we will see.
But thanks for the advice, and peace !
A.
Wow! Without a doubt, this video is the best of all the finalists! The voice, the graphics, the colors, the energy, the fluidity, everything is wonderful... well, except the phrase "raise with us", which doesn't mean anything in English. It sounds like a translation error. I would suggest one of the following instead:
So come, and..
1) Evolve with us
2) Join us
3) Join with us
4) Grow with us
5) Team up with us
Or something like that. Good luck... I hope you win!
(PS- I need to note that this Vimeo video was the only entry I was unable to watch under Linux + Firefox + Flash 9.0r48... I had to go elsewhere... would be nice to have a Youtube link somewhere)
crxssi : Thanks, glad you liked it ! :D
I see the raise with us bring a lot of debate :-P For the vimeo problem I don't know... :-( I don't have troubles with it, I already tryed with google but the codec encryption insert a lot of glitches so I prefered to deliver quality.
The vote system seems to be down...
Thanks again !
A.
This is great. The best one.
I would really like a version 2 of this one. Needs to be fine tuned this one. I don't like the "raise with us" for example. But this one has a good ground to make something beautiful.
More about the evolution theme I think..
Thanks blinkiz, but I guess it wasn't enough or what the jury was looking for... the winner was Tweeto and even if it makes me sad :-) , props to him, I hope he will enjoy his trip to Japan.
Peace
A.
You should release the source code of this one. After a while we will probably see a bunch of forks doing amazing stuff whit this one.
Simple, let the community play with it!
I love this. The I+you+we=Linux slogan is quirky but brilliant - it really works and I want a banner of it for my website now! :)
As for the video - well - it gives me shivers when I watch it. It's somehow organic and really touches me somewhere.
defsdoor : I'm glad you liked the spot and that it provoques such things on you, that's the best artist prize, people feeling things. For the banner I beleive it would have to wait since my video wasn't picked, I suppose the message from Tweeto is the one that will be used.
Peace,
A.
It's quite annoying that while it is about free software, I have to download Adobe's non-free Flash in order to view it :-(.
At least an OGG formatted downloadable would be nice!
gerymate : I used Vimeo for the playback online because it allows me better definition and Youtube encoding system was inserting random glitches on my video. So I had to chose and I prefered quality for everyone.
A downloadable version will be soon available with a little signature on it.
A.
It's great!
My first impression was that is was made in blender, too bad it wasn't - but it's still cool.
And no worries, your voice fits here perfectly!
Chainz : It's not mine anymore :D it's the one from a friend of mine Sanya. But thanks for the props !
Take care,
A.
Congratulations!
This is a great, powerful and immersing video. Both concept and aesthetics are top-notch.
As for the tools used, I don't care. This video is not about sticking linux in places you do not feel comfortable with, right?
Mate,
Superb, I'll show this to everyone in my organization. Wishes from me to become contest winner.
An Ogg version of this video is *coming*. We had some trouble converting it, so I've asked the author to give it a try.

La voix de la narratrice ressemble étrangement à celle de Laurie Anderson...
Arriving OGG formatted versions of free software advocacy material are always a good thing to hear about. The arrival is double the joy. Knowing the exact licensing terms and seeing copyleft there are the non plus ultra.
I will be sending the OGG version of the video tonight to Brian Proffitt so he can post it for everyone.
Claude Pelletier : I never thaught about that, I will tell my friend Sanya about it and se how she reacts :D
Peace,
A.
Man, that Video gave me Goose Bumps. The last time I had this with a Linux-Related Video was with the Prodigy Linux IBM Commercial. ;)
Really well done. It's plain but really nice for the eye. And the message it carries is exactly the Point I like about GNU/Linux.
And I really respect your Opinion that even Linux-People (Devs and Users) keep on measuring up against Apple and MS. I think the same as you. That is absolutely unnecessary. We should enjoy the wonderful Concept of Linux, OpenSource and Free Software more. Just as you did and show us with your Video.
The Voice was beautiful. So a +1 on compliments for Sanya from me too.
I'd be really interested in additional "Merchandise" of your Video as well. Like Wallpapers, Banners, Animated Wallpapers and a High Resulution Version.
For me your Video is the real #1 in this Contest. ;)
Voltaire,
Thanks for all those great comments, and I'm glad you think as me that we must stop measuring up against companies like MS or Apple. We just have to enjoy it and pass the word... the rest will come.
About the "Merchandise"... well, we will have to see with the foundation. Since they picked another video as the winner, maybe that's the one they want to represent this "We Are Linux" thing.
I sent today an HD OGG version to the Foundation, it should be up soon I beleive.
Thanks for telling me that I'm the real #1... I will be probably enter another video linux contest, let's hope I will have more luck on that one.
Peace,
A.
Yes, thanks to Agustin's efforts, an Ogg version of this video is now available (see list of source files under video above).

"Raise with us" is a problem. I understand what you are trying to say. "Revolt with us" would be the most literal translation, but is a bit confrontational.
My suggestions are:
"Rise up with us" --(I think most people might find this abstract and confusing .)
"Grow with us" --(This suggests obtaining more of a presence in the world which is okay.)
"Be free with us" --(I think this is closer to the concept behind Linux and OSS.)
"Break free with us" --(This suggests the action of revolt without being confrontational and it establishes the concept of freedom. My fav.)
And I must say, this is an excellent video.
Perfect 10
I can understand why the LinuxAD made the race, it's straight and you can't miss it.
Your clip runs emotions and is simply of another kind and way better but not everybody's darling.
The soundtrack, altered voice and the graphics keeps the viewer balanced between fear and hope. "raise with us" gives a decent kick to fear, just to be kicked out by the incredible "I+you+we=Linux". The last sound peace may lead to the question "Are you sure?" But it's better in the whole context of the clip as a smooth fade out.
Don't bend and take the uncertain out of it. Keep it mind twisted. That's what makes it unique! Hope to see it in cinemas some day!
I also preferred yours than the actual winner ;)
The mood, feeling created here was just perfect!
Ranganr, chainz :
Thank you for the nice comments... I know that my video was a "less widely accepted" concept... but I took the risk to do it. I deeply beleive that art is all about that, taking risks and trying to deliver something that is not the standard, that rise above the rest.
I'm not saying that my video is art, or that it's better... I'm just saying that it was what I was aiming for ! I hope i somewhat reached that goal.
I tryed to trace in 60 secs a glimpse of the Linux history and evolution, and leaving an open message for the future...
I'm kind of happy with the result for the short time I had to make this... I hope I will do better next time.
Peace everyone,
A.
Hi,
I wanted to ask if there is higher resolution version available somewhere.
cheers

Antony:
I see where you are coming from and feel the same. It is an amazing video none the less. But loses a bit of it's magic knowing it was made with software on another plaform. It's like using Domino's kitchen to make a Pizza Hut Pizza. Yeah the pizza tastes the same maybe even better, but then why am I eating at Pizza Hut? That's a horrible analogy I guess...
Will they have this contest again next year? If so, I'd be using Processing, Ardour, and Kdenlive. I had no idea this contest was going on.
This is awesome (not Sparta)!
Video is Cool I love the voice and I really enjoyed the style
