to stay away from live footage, or any usual representation. Instead I looked for a more abstract form, trying to touch symbols (they tend to be stronger). Everything is symbolic in this video and has a purpose, from the very beginning with the cell/egg form representing the beginning of life, the metamorphosis, multiplication, then fusion to build something better and stronger (only with collaboration you can go higher), etc.

Just in case, there is a better resolution version at :

I thought this was really very cool.
Thanks for the nice comment, I'm glad that you liked it.
If people have any question on how this little short movie was made I will be more than happy to give some insight.
A.
This movie is incredible! I wish you the best for the contest! What software did you use to create it if it's not a too personal question? I really enjoy the black smoke effect that disolves in the background.
Thumbs up!
awesome! It just needs a new voice over
ps: please give us some "making of"
Thanks for the kind comments people,
Nitrate :
I only used three softwares in here : After Effects, Pixelmator, Soundbooth. I first had a very ambitious project with a lot of 3D (using blender and houdini), but timewise it was impossible and on top of that rendertimes wouldn't fit the deadline. So I took the decision to rebuild my hole concept and do it on a more Motion Graphic way (but keeping some of that 3D perspective).
matteo :
I'm willing to do that, just to give some insight, everything was created on the computer between the three softwares I named in this same post. I had in total with all the nested composition inside compositions more than 200 layers of animation or graphic elements.
On the other hand nothing too fancy was used, the smoke effect is real footage just timed right and color corrected to make it fit into the composition. Particles where generated in AE. All the deformations, and random movements where scripted in AE to give it a real life random movement and not hand animated.
The rest was just artistic direction to give it the look I was looking for.
For the voice, I KNOWWWWWWW !!! :-D I hate my own voice... If I had the time I would have casted someone with a more baritone voice, to sound very deep and profound. Just didn't had the time for it... :-(
Thanks again guys

Yo Agu,
ça tue sa maman ! Comme d'hab quoi ! Très claaaasse, très pro ! La bande son est nikel ! ! !! !! ! ! !!! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! !
Ca mériterait un first price...
T'as tué Agu... Enjoy...
Merci Nono,
Merci pour les gentils comment mec!
A.
C'est la meilleure vidéo, for sure.
Thanks everyone for the nice replys !!!
et mon vote en plus ;)
Bonjour!

Nitrane,
I will answer you in english so everyone can understand !
I was glad to answer your questions, don't hesitate if you have more I will gladly answer. I will try to make some kind of explanatory making off of this project with screenshots and all... The creation process was kind of chaotic at the beginning, so I won't promise a step by step.
For the Final Cut part, it's not a big deal... those are just tools. I use the right tool for my work, and I don't care on wich platform it runs. If there is a Linux version then great I will adopt it as soon as it's out. But sometimes it's not and I have to get on with it... that's the way it works.
Where I work I'm kind of the IT guy, so I switched all our servers to Linux, a lot of workstations now are on Linux for the 3D part of the pipeline. But until there isn't an After Effects/Photoshop/Final Cut version on Linux or some kind of equivalent we will be dual booting or running macs.
That's in my opinion one of the big steps Linux has to make, get on the creative market but on a more mainstream way, not only specialized studios that have theyre own built in tools... I use already a LOT blender, it's amazing how this project have grown up and is such a mature project.
Anyway, I'm talking too much,
And thanks for saying that my project deserves the right to represent Linux...
A.
Great video, a lot higher quality than the majority of those posted here =)
Hello people,
Just to let you know a new version will be online soon with a new voice over it... much better one this time :D
Thanks again for the replys !
A.
"I+YOU+WE=Linux" is a phenomenal slogan!
I could do without the 'raise with us'. Maybe change it to 'grow with us'.
This video has the best special effects / animation that I have seen yet. I'd like to say 'amazing work' to the author.
My only criticism is that it is a bit too dark. I would suggest, that for a finalist entry, have the same excellent animation work, but make the them of the video (perhaps the music) slightly more positive.
I like it! Good job!
Wow, I'm amazed by the feedback in here... :)
linux_underpants : thank you, I wanted and simple yet stylish slogan that could represent the individual, the person next to you and also the community, and come up with that. I'm very happy that you liked it.
For the "raise" with us, I had in mind the word "revolution", because in some way Linux stands against commercial, fud, etc. And I like the idea of people getting on their feets after beeing a long time on theyre knees. But I will think about it.
cfriedt : Thanks for the nice comments about VFX/Animation ! That makes me feel proud of my work, even if I think it could have been better with more time on the pipeline. For the colors that is due to color compression when you upload online. I will be recording a new voice tonight for the spot (foundation allowed me to do this). So I will be boosting background color a little bit so when I compress it for online use it won't be crashed too dark.
Weboide : Merci :-)
very cool! I like it! :D
Sweeeeeeet dude... sweeeeet.....
5 Thumbs up!
Hello everyone,
Thanks for the kind words, I have good news !!!
New voice over is up, just sent link to Foundation so I hope it will be online soon, I pushed the colors a little bit so they are clearer with online compression.
Let me know what you think about it please.
Agustin
Could you, err, make this available in an open format, by any chance? Or, at least, a format that works right under Linux?
As I am sure you are aware, the native build of the Flash Player is horrible in Linux - especially in 64-bit Linux. At the moment, in fact, it plain does not work for me. A great deal of clicking tells me that the only way to watch this is with Flash.
Oh, and it's proprietary, which does not mesh with your message.
Rest assured, I did watch this successfully with Flash in Windows. Awesome job! 5/5 :)
I dearly hope this one wins. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the speech at the end. Is "raise with us" a little language glitch, or am I losing touch?
Having heard the first 2 seconds of the new one before Flash collapsed, I am hopeful but still a tad uncertain. Can't wait to hear the rest again!
The effects are awesome, and I like the classy way you communicate the message. (Without sounding like an over-confident sales person, eg. Ballmer's Windows 1.0 ad which I see duplicated in most other entries).
What we NEED is Avery Brooks. Maybe you can hire his voicey services in exchange for pizza or something...
You know justcallmenobody, I think I've picked at a lot of videos on here. I can't stress enough the importance of describing Linux correctly. I know this ad isn't selling breathmints, Nikes, or some obscure product. This ad is perfect. All I can say is... damn good job. I hope I see this ad on tv in time for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala... My gf uses Photoshop CS4 in Kubuntu (8.10) and it works fine. I know alot of people have been having trouble, but for the few who have it working great in Linux I think it's a sign that Wine should have this area filled in MAYBE a year. Who knows. Top pic video dude, good luck.
dylanmccall :
All the other videos on this site are Flash based players at the moment... I don't get your request, but after the end of the contest I will put online a downloadable version encoded in various formats.
Thanks for the nice comments, but I'm not sure about Avery... I don't think pizza will be enough for him ;-)
And I'm very happy with the voice of my friend Sanya... don't you think her voice is delicious ? :-D
justintime :
Thanks, I'm glad you like it and that you feeled the message as I was trying to communicate it. Me too I hope to win on this one ;-)
Take care everyone !
A.
Aha! There's a QuickTime version to download on the bottom right of the page for this new one on Vimeo.
Here's a direct link.
What I mean with my request is that most other videos have an alternative download available beyond the embedded Flash player. Sorry, I don't know how that works since I've never used the video upload on this site before :)
If I could change my rating to something higher than 5/5 with this new version, I would. Well done, Sanya!
I like it! Great job!
Thanks people for the feedback and the great spirit... in the end that's what Linux is all about !
:D
Take care,
A.
Amazing video, really th bes I've seen so far!
Congrats!
jnfbatista, thanks for the nice comments, and I'm glad you think this one is the best! I just wanted to give it a PRO look. Take care...
A.
justcallmenobody, it does look very very PRO. Its awesome!!
:D
Merci pour les commentaires.
A.
just amazing.
having production skills like that while also being the 'it guy' is some past time ;)
new voice is great and i+you+we is so simple but a perfect fit. hope the slogan at the very least gets picked up.
my one comment would be 'raise with us' doesn't really make much sense. 'grow with us' is pretty good though.
otherwise. well done. easily both the best 'message' and video i've seen so far!
Bit32,
I will start to feel embarassed with all the nice words you people post up here. Thanks again to you and all the people who voted and commented on this little production.
I'm please that you liked the slogan, I wanted to find something simple, short, and representing the community spirit...
I'm unable to change the texting right now since we are on votation for the contest, but when I choosed "raise" I had in mind this kind of revolution Linux is, and the concept on the way it's developped and maintained, the way it has spread around the world... and since it also touches governments, schools, individuals, I really liked the "revolution" concept.
"Grow" is also a nice word, but then I would rather say something like "Lets all grow together" (very rough idea of course, I would have to work a little more on this one).
Take care man.
A.
it's AWESOME =)
Thanks and glad you liked it EdwardKaravakis !
Take care,
A.
Cool concept. Kind of has the feel of a movie trailer. Nicely done.
Thanks dmisen, wanted to make it very dynamic so people won't get bored. Glad you liked it !!!
A.
I prefered the guy's voice, it was better suiting with the theme.
one of the best!
itpinoy : Thanks for the nice comment !
weboide : strange, everyone seems to like a lot more the voice of the girl. But hey, choice is good isn't it ? ;-)
A.
Good vídeo, but if linux is good why dont you made it using linux? Someone will ask the linux comunity about it..
Is Linux not ready?
It is a free software contest...
Antony :
This is the kind of non constructive comments that is a bad example to the community. Just show me the tool on the free software side that is at least close to a product like After Effects. You can search, you wont be able to find any... And don't name Jahshaka, because it's not even close to it.
When you work as a professionnal you use the tool that does what you need, without beeing religious about it. It's all about getting the result you want in the amount of time that you have. I use a lot of tools under linux : Houdini, Maya, Gimp, Blender, etc. And I already posted that one of the very important fields where open source should do some serious inroads are art tools.
Go and say to the guy who does 3D sculpting at the studio where I work that he can only use Linux and maybe Blender for 3D Sculpting ? He's gonna laugh at you, because he uses the tool that better suits his work and blender right now can't even touch the amount of poly and fluid work Zbrush or Mudbox can do. There is a time where is not what you prefer, but what does it better.
Don't get me wrong, I love blender and use it A LOT !
When a replacement to After Effects will be available on the open source community I will embrace it and even make tutorials for it.
Do you really beleive that Microsoft commercials are only made on computers running Windows ? They are surely cuted and mastered over Final Cut Apple computers, 3D on windows and so on, do you realy think that MS really cares about it ? No, they want the spot out.
This contest is about Linux and why "We Are Linux"... it's about community, strenght and sharing... and NOT "free" software. You are the first one having this negative attitude.
Just my 2 cents.
A.
I never saw anything about it being a free software contest.
And I should know. :)

This better win. I hate windows myself, but I don't believe bashing windows or mac people will help win over a fanbase. This is video is very well done production wise and it makes you curious about what linux is. We've all heard the BSOD jokes and such, but I think trying to be religious about and going door to door forcing linux down peoples throat will make them not want to try it, but make them curious about and they may just give it a shot.
Dont get me wrong...
I meant that to say we are linux, we should at least to use it.
I use linux and I hate when someone tell that windows is better and then I would hate if some of my friends tell me that there is a good video about linux at the internet buuut, made on windows...See?
I was just talking about it...
First : Windows was never used to create this spot...
Second : I use Linux A LOT ! on the server side and also on the desktop side, and also for my creative needs, read my post.
Third : You still don't get my point. I told you, you use what does the job for you, if the tool is not available to me under Linux, I will use wathever OS get the job done. Period, I won't let any sort of subjective consideration get in the way with the quality of the work I want/have to deliver. You don't have to feel bad, it's just work and tools.
I wanted to make a cool spot for Linux (and I hope I did), I had to make choices due to the very short time I had to accomplish this. I had to be fast, clever and make the right choices to have a pro look (and I hope it looks pro). What should I do ? Let some bad choices break the hole project because the tools aren't there yet or not ready ? No, because that way we will end up always having something average. You use what's best suited... and what you best know !
I'm working on a project right now, and I'm using Blender a lot, because it was the right choice to tackle the objectives I had planned.
I should add also : Linux is about beeing open to things, to each other, and even Windows. Linux is not about rejecting Windows, it'as about embracing things.
My 2 cents.
A.
I think this might be a bit difficult to grasp, and I can also see problems with the thick accent, though I understood it pretty well. Overall I like the presentation, though, and I think this is the strongest video of the finalists.
I love the voice and I really enjoyed the style (reminded me of a movie trailer). I think this is the best video and it illustrates what linux is about - leaving room for a lot of curiosity - instead of illustrating whats wrong with apple or windows, which in my opinion has become very old and cliche since apple entered the market. I love its uniqueness and I hope it is picked to promote linux.
I think the voiceover is beautiful, sexy and mysterious, and thus matches the video exquisitely well. I don't think her accent was particularly thick or unclear, either, but of course that's subjective. My suggestion concerning the slogan is to try "rise up" in the place of "raise" if your aim is to allude to revolution. Something like "let's grow together" isn't really bad, per se, but my initial feeling from that is a much more happy/cutesy/Web 2.0 feeling, which might seem incongruous with the rest of the spot. Anyway, absolutely stunning work! Makes me wanna run out and find a PPC-compatible distro right now and plunge myself into its tantalizingly mysterious world. :)
